New Amsterdam Stories is an ever-expanding collaboration between cultural heritage institutions to make connections and enhance our understanding of early New York. Explore the collections of each partner below.

 

NYC Municipal Archives

The NYCMA holds the records of New York City government from 1647-2014. Its Dutch holdings include the court records of New Amsterdam and records of the towns on Long Island now part of NYC.

Stadsarchief Amsterdam

The Amsterdam City Archives is the historical documentation center of the city of Amsterdam with 50 kilometers of archives. An exciting project is under way to digitize and transcribe the 17th century notarial archives of the city.

The New Netherland Institute

For more than three decades, the New Netherland Institute has supported the transcription, translation, and publication of the 17th-century Dutch colonial records held by the New York State Library and State Archives.

Museum of the City of New York

 

The Museum of the City of New York celebrates and interprets the city, educating the public about its distinctive character, especially its heritage of diversity, opportunity, and perpetual transformation.

Landmarks Preservation Commission

The Archaeology Department of the Landmarks Preservation Commission oversees sub-surface excavations in New York City and maintains an archaeological archive. 

New Amsterdam History Center

The mission of the New Amsterdam History Center is to encourage public exploration of the early history of New Amsterdam and New York City, its diverse peoples, landscapes, institutions, and global legacy.

 

New York Genealogical and Biographical Society

Founded in 1869, the New York Genealogical and Biographical Society is New York's largest - and oldest - genealogical organization.
